Built in 1924 by John Sprunt Hill-distinguished alumnus, wealthy businessman and University trustee-the inn's original notion was "to give for the primary wants and comforts of the University alumni and University visitors". In 1935, Hill donated the Inn to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with the stipulation that after meeting expenses, profits from the Inn were to be used for "the maintenance and support of the University library, and specifically for the support of the range of books and papers known as the North Carolina Collection". Mr. Hill's wishes are calm carried out today as the Inn returns its profits to the University to support the University library. A bronze plaque commemorating Mr. Hill's donation is situated at the facade table of the Inn and entirely simply states "This liberal gift affords a social Inn for guests, a city hall for the country, and a home for returning sons and daughters of alma mater"

Architect Arthur C. Nash of New York conceived the "southern colonial style" used in the original design of the Inn. The majority outstanding elements are the two-story portico overlooking Cameron Avenue, and the glazed cupola that crowns the building; both were copied from G eorge Washington's home in Mount Vernon, Virginia. Today, The Carolina Inn more resembles a commodious residential estate than a commercial property. The architectural design, intimate courtyards and lush landscaping all cater to provide visitors a sense of serenity and solitude. The wealthy colour scheme, antiques and plush furniture call forth images of a lavish privately-owned residence.
