The hotel is proud of a Star Chamber apartment with four tapestries depicting the seasons, which was authentically at the Court of Westminster and is a particular feature. Previously owned by the Earl of Derby - who raced his horses along the waterside mud flats - it's believed the inn is the property of the original 'Derby' horserace. The Castle dates from 1593 and features an astonishing front that faces the beach.

The foyer is little and conventional with the major feature being the iron and stone "Battle Staircase", so called because of the hand-painted nameplates of well-known British battles set into the wrought-iron rails.
