Area information
Bawtry has been a market place city since it was granted its 1st charter in 1213. Its location made Bawtry the "Gateway to the North" with main highway and rail networks passing through the city. A few Roman military camps were located near Bawtry because the city lay across the route from Lincoln to York. The legions would have forded the River Idle near where the stone bridge on Gainsborough Road now stands. In the middle ages, the highways were so bad that the rivers were preferred as a means of transportation. In 1379, Bawtry was a growing port and continued to develop its river trade till 1777 when traffic bound for the Rivers Trent and Humber was re-routed onto the freshly opened Chesterfield Canal. After the Turnpike Act of 1759, the highways improved and stage coaches ran regular services from stage to stage. Bawtry was one of these stages. In 1890 the city lounge was built for social functions. It could hold 450 persons, and is now home to Bawtry`s Flower and Plant sales. Sailors and merchants have worshipped in St Nicholas` church since 1200 although it did not become Bawtrys parish church till 1858.
