A short meander from the centre of the town is Bowes Museum. A greatly magnificent structure, which features very near ties to the late Queen Mother, the Museum houses the known feeding silver swan. Approximately 8 miles from the centre of the town is High Force, the biggest waterfall in England. Only 6 miles away is Raby Castle with its big deer garden and gardens; the best examples of its kind in the state. There are a few reservoirs in the area; the furthest away is Cow Green, at approximately 12 miles. Most have day fishing permits accessible, subject to having a fishing licence. Way marked strolls are in abundance all over the region with a few quaint medieval social houses offering top quality food appropriately situated after a thirsty walk. For those wanting more adventure, the Lake District is only one hour’s drive away. Suppers are accessible by demand.
