Location Information

Centuries ago a town with black marble walls rose up at the crossroads of Anatolia and Mesopotamia. Throughout heritage this town features witnessed plenty of civilizations and a lot of wars. Today Diyarbakir maintains the significance it had a lot of years ago by being the biggest center of trade, industry, culture and education in South-East Anatolia. The town's pivotal role in the South-East Anatolia Project (GAP) is attracting substantial Turkish and foreign investors.

The ancient city of Diyarbakir is encircled by imposing black basalt walls, almost 6 km long, dating from early Byzantine times - 330 to 500 AD. It's well worth investigating the length of the walls, with their 4 stunning gates - the Harput Kapisi to the north; the Mardin Kapisi to the south; the Yenikapi to the east and the Urfa Kapisi to the west and some 72 bastions and towers. From the walls, you have an stunning vista of the city below.

The city of Diyarbakir features a foreign, oriental ambiance with much of the architecture being of Arab rather than Ottoman fashion. The black and white stone banding is distinctive of a lot of of the mosques. It's well worth visiting the Ulu Cami, which was constructed in 1091 and extensively renovated in 1155. The Hasan Pasa Hani, was indigenously a caravanserai built in the sixteenth century to cottage tourists, and is now used as a bazaar, selling carpets and conventional Turkish wares.

Several of the nearby cities such as Mardin and Bitlis, are of interest and it's worth making the journey from here to lake Van, a good inland sea, of some 3750 piazza kilometres. The landscape is fabulous, with snow capped hills rising from verdant verdure.
