Area information
Gruyères The old-fashioned city of Gruyères is situated on upper of a hill close to the Swiss Alps. It's part of cultural memorials of national importance. The name Gruyères is probably related to the crane (Grue in French) the bird on the coat of arms. The incredible palace dominates the city. 19 counts of Gruyères lived in the palace between the 11th and the 16th century. The last one, by the name of Michael, went bankrupt in 1554. His creditors, the cities of Fribourg and Berne divided the shire between them. The castel became the residence of the « governor» of Fribourg from 1555 to 1798, then the seat of the region governor. 1849 it was sold to the family Bovy of Geneva who reconstructed it. In 1938, the country of Fribourg bought it back from the family Balland and installed a museum with a striking range of artefacts. The political city of Gruyères has a surface of 28km2. The ancient town counts some 170 inhabitants and is visited every year by approximately one million travellers. They are impressed by the compact architecture and the well conserved entity of the city. The city walls are available and specially amazing is the « Belluard » fortification located on the north wall. Along the major highway which catered as market place piazza in the past, several well protected gothic buildings are located. At the foot of the former salt-depository called « Calvaire » because of a sculptured group representing the crucifixion, a few stone grain measures are silent conserved. On the right of the « Calvaire » the highway goes down to the St-Theodul Parish-Church mentioned for the 1st time in 1254 and also the « Clos aux cerfs » (deer park), today a children’s playground. The highway to the left leads up towards the palace with its extremely amazing exhibitions and the idyllic panorama. Below the palace, is the museum of HR Giger, the great artist and creator of the fantastic world of the « Alien ». In Pringy, close to the hill, the cheese-factory lets you watch the manufacturing of the renowned Gruyère cheese day after day.
