Area information
The city has constantly been connected to the sea. The old part is situated on an island which was inhabited already in the 1st century A.D. and later connected to the beach by a stone bridge. It was encircled by city walls which were demolished in the start of the 19th century and the ruins were used to fill up the sea between the island and the beach. In early 13th century Izola declared independence and became a city with its own laws and authorities. The conventional fishing, shipbuilding and the recent built marina gather together persons in Izola who fell in love with the sea and the sail. The Mediterranean ambience is everywhere in the air- in the picturesque streets, during a stroll by the sea, in a little talk with local persons, on the coast. Another thing a visitor cannot miss are the fresh Adriatic sea food specialties with local wine and olive oil from the nearby plantations of grapevines and olive plantations.
