Area information
The extensive, sun-baked plain of the "Baixo Alentejo", where clients can drive for miles amongst wheatfields and olive groves without seeing a soul, also encompass a lot of cities and countrysides which reflect the long Moorish occupation, with narrow streets, amazingly whitewashed houses and decorative tiles. In some places, like Beja, heritage goes back even further, to the Roman times, when it became a regional capital under Julius Caesar. The Moorish arquitecture is visible in the cobbled streets and houses of the hold city, and a palace from the 13th century reminds us of the struggle to keep them away. Another palace of equally Moorish origins, can be seen in Serpa, but the major attraction of this peacefull agricultural city, also known for its cheese, is the Beja gate: wide walls toppedd by an aqueduct. Serpa stands close to the Spanish border and, as this district was once disputed both from the Moors and the Spaniards, there are a few watchtowers and fortresses along the mountains. The plantations of grapevines around Vidigueira announce its situation as a center of wine production, the Alentejo proposes a few marvellous quality wines. Mértola is another site to visit. this little city is a sort of museum, exhibiting discoveries from various eras in disunite regions, from the Phoenicians to the Romans and, particularly, the Moors. In the present day, Mértola represents also the probability to have to have an unforgetable ride in the Guadiana river, or to taste some local peculiarities such as the lamprey.
