The town of Aveiro covers an region of ca. 200km², with a population of 73, 332 and 14 cities, and it's one of the 19 municipalities of the area of Aveiro. Once a spacious sea port, Aveiro lies in a district of valleys cut by hills and fertile lagoon plains. These plains are bathed by the Ria (Lagoon), which came into existence in the 16th century after terrible storms. It covers 11, 000 hectares, with four major channels forming inlets and countless islands and islets. The district is wealthy in fish and water fowl and there are lovely fishing service, both in the lagoon and in the open sea. Hunting is also a probability and the larger stretches of water welcome all types of aquatic sports. The town of Aveiro is crossed by canals, which provide it entirely an individual character, and in the antique quarter, travellers can see the quaint white washed houses of the fishermen and visit, early in the morning, the Mercado do Peixe - an auction of the fish caught during the night. Of all the boats seen in the district, the Moliceiro is the most dainty, being ideally lined, painted with clear colours and often with ingenious and humorous decorations. The wonderful coast of São Jacinto lies at the foot of the woods and the São Jacinto Dunes Natural Reserve, with well conserved dunes and a diverse flora and fauna. Those who appreciate vivid food can taste the tasty eel stew and a range of sea and lagoon fish soups. But Aveiro is particularly known for its sweets: the most outstanding is "ovos moles" ("soft eggs") - sweetened egg yolk in candied casings shaped like fish or barrels.
