Portugal is a country in southwestern Europe, situated on the Iberian Peninsula. Poryugal is the westernmost country of mainland Europe and shares borders with the Atlantic Ocean in the west and south and with Spain to the east. Portugal's position explains the fact that it attracts lots of tourists each year. The main tourist areas are first of all the Greater Lisbon, the Algarve, Portuguese Islands, Greater Porto and Northern Portugal and Alentejo. Today, most tourists in Portugal are from Great Britain, Spain, Germany and usually they are searching not only the beach and the sun, but also are interested in culture, city breaks, cuisine, travel in business. The European cities that attract most tourists are Barcelona and Lisbon where tourists can find lotsof hotels to lodge in. Lisbon in recent years surpassed even the Algarve as the leading tourist region in Portugal.
