The wealthy heritage of this patrician's cottage, as recorded in the city's archeological archives, begins with its foundation around. A.d. 1100. It's one of the 10 most necessary historical memorials of Groningen. The Schimmelpennick Huys has been landlord to a wide range of individuals throughout the centuries, from soldiers of the 80-year war to squatters of the 20th century! Numbered among its more famous dwellers are the French count Jean Baptista du Monceau, Lieutenant General of the Bataafse army (which expelled Napolean's forces), the town prosecutor Lambert Sijlman with his English wife Lady Elisabeth Shotte, and the town dentist, the German Dr. Joseph Otte. The last main building works were carried out in 1723 under Lambert Sijlman's supervision. The Louise XVI-style Baroque apartment in the rear of the cottage dates to this time. The cottage takes its name from Jan Rutger Schimmelpennick, a counsel-of-state during the time of the Bataafse Republic. He, along with 3 fellow-revolutionaries, held secret conferences here. They were held in the Baroque suite. The ceiling of this suite is indeed unbelievable with its exuberant decor. In the center are symbols adopted from the French Revolution. From the 4 corners, portraits of the leaders of the Revolution look down at visitors in tranquil witness to these long gone days of danger and heroism.

After a period of drastic refurbishment and development Het Schimmelpenninck Huys has opened a seafood restaurant, as well as its French á la carte restaurant “Classique”. Very close to the park of the historical major building, located in the former “Jagershuis”, cook de cuisine Carlos Jansen lays the emphasis on the sea instead of the land. The kitchen secures market-fresh, top-quality products, culinary creativity in cooking and an option of dishes. A wealthy snack or dinner in de Parelvisser does not solely depend on the cook de cuisine, his creations and the atmosphere, but also on the care that the visitors get from their landlord. Regarding the inside of de Parelvisser it was decided to opt for a playful, yet classical design of marble and cherry-wood. The visitor has a straight panorama of the open kitchen where the dishes are being ready.

Parking is in facade of Schimmelpenninck Huys. Parking is prohibited outside delivery times. During delivery times parking is allowed on the pavement ( loading and unloading only ). The delivery times are five am to 11 am and 6 pm to 8 pm. You are able to stop and unload in Kleine Peperstraat ( diagonally opposite SchimmelpenninckHuys, next to Kamphuis). Q-park Rademarkt is the nearest parking facility (2 mins by foot). From 1 January 2007: EUR 12. 50 per 24 hours. Parking tickets accessible at the reception table. Social Transport: The train station is a 6 minute stroll. Cross the water close to the 'Groninger Museum' and continue to the 'Zuiderdiep'. Go to the right and you'll find the 'Oosterstraat' at the left. Turn left and within 100 m you'll the hotel at your left handside.
