Area information
Most persons know Dokkum from the heritage books as the city where in 754 AD the missionary Bonfatius was murdered. Of course the name of this Saint is forever connected to the town, but there is more: Dokkum is a historic location with museums, the so called "Admiraliteitshuis", plenty of wonderfully reconstructed houses and memorials, narrow alleys and the ancient defense works, "bolwerken". In a sense, Dokkum takes you back to days long gone. Dokkum is the capital of the Lauwersmeer region, a particular nature reserve with lakes, brooks, beaches and woodland. The roomy fishing haven of Lauwersoog is definitely worth a visit, but the same goes for the smaller ones in Dokkumer Nieuwe Zijlen, Oostmahorn and Zoutkamp. The nearby area is good for cycling or tourism tours, and a visit to the islands (Ameland, Schiermonnikoog) is everytime a probability. Surrounding, in the double countryside Paesesns-Moddergat, the antique fishermen cods - a museum - is worth seeing, whereas in Anjum the renowned bird resort "De Fûgelpits" can be visited. The ongoing struggle against the tides and the sea can be skilled on the highest so-called "terp", Hogebeintum. Sailing along the Waddensea or the Lauwersmeer (a lake) is also advised.
