General Information

We believe that it's hard to imagine a structure that better encapsulates the concept of "living in the centre" than the Grand Hotel Piazza Borsa. The central part of the building used to be the convent and the vast church of Mercedarian Fathers. Both the abbey, characterized by daringly high porticoes, and the ancient convent door have remained practically unchanged. Above the latter is the effigy that the Mercedarians chose as symbol of their mission: a Pelican feeding its baby, an reputation that quiet evokes memories of the Christian spiritual convention. During the early 18th century, the rising prestige of the Monks made them also gain the ensuite building of the princes of the Cattolica Briuccia family. 3 bridges approximately twenty m long spanned the space between the 2 buildings. They were supported by dainty columns of grey Billiemi marble. These bridges are calm famous in Palermo, as the "Passetti" of Palazzo Briuccia. In 1907, the church of the Immaculate Conception Cartari was demolished. In its site, the architect Ernesto Basile built the headquarters of the "Cassa Centrale di Risparmio Vittorio Emanuele", in the process taking up even more of the original piazza. The structure was inaugurated in 1912. The "new" substantial edifice features come to us practically, a superbly intact jewel of European Art Noveau. Content provided favour of the premises.
