Area information
Founded as a Greek colony in the 6th century B.C., Agrigento became one of the leading towns of the Mediterranean world. Located on the island of Sicily it's universally known for the stunning Valley of Temples, the sacred district of antique Akragas, one of the most indispensable colonies of the Greek Empire. Hills and mountains are the dominant elements of Agrigento and the nearby village. From Agrigento, the antique Akragas, there is an completely superior view: opposite the present-day town you'll find the Valley of Temples, magnificent and full of bunchs of flowers, one of the most charming and evocative archaeological districts in the whole Mediterranean. The temples of Concord, Hera, Zeus, Hercules, Castor and Pollux follow one another in an archaeological prom which is specific in the world and bears witness to the past splendour of this town which was amongst the most majestic and powerful of the antiquity. The Archaeological Museum is wealthy in finds dating from that time (as well as objects from the province) and is an absolute must for the guest. Of course Agrigento, as well as its archaeological district, is also enchanting for its historic city center, in which the Cathedral founded by the Norman (11th century) and Santo Spirito church dating back to the 12th century with a noteworthy Baroque stucco business inside, are specially fascinating. One can also visit the church of S. Maria dei Greci, built in the 7th century on the foundations of a Greek temple devoted to Athena and the cottage of the writer and playwright Luigi Pirandello, which is now a museum. Agrigento's economy is based on sulfur and potash mining, agriculture and touring. Here you are able also find wealthy deposits of asphalt, salt, marble and volcanic phenomena such as hot springs, gas emissions and mud volcanoes. The town is catered by Porto Empedocle wich provides Agrigento's sea communications, one of the best haven on the southwest beach of Sicily and Italy's principal sulfur port. But Agrigento is also the seaside. Serene, clear, blue waters for a lot of kms of sandy beaches and white cliffs, from Punta Bianca to Porto Empedocle with San Leone as an wonderful point of reference. With its little treveller port it's an perfect site for sailors. Sails and motorboats add colour to the crystal serene waters. Agrigento is a desirable spot where a long staying is pleasant. From December to February the almond-trees in flower provide the "Templesvalley" a peculiar glamour and an extraordinary fascination.
