In fact, local legend features it that the name Nashik originated from the fact that Lakshman cut off Surpanakha's nose here! Situated approximately 200 kilometers from Mumbai, Nashik is a main treveller attraction in Maharashtra. Nashik is also the major stopover for guests on the way to Shirdi and the Sai Baba complex. Of unique note is the Trimbakeshwar temple, considered to be one of the holiest spots in India. Surrounding lie the Pandavlena caves - Buddhist caves that date back to the first century BC. Those tired of the daily grind able to head for the Vipassana heart that is only 40 kilometers away. Throw in a trip to the 600 BC Chambhar caves and the Nandur Madhameshwar bird sanctuary whilst you're there. And no doubt, during the monsoons a trip to the Bhandardara dam is a must!
