Around 1987, when the array of scientists and travellers visiting the Monteverde Biological Reserve began to rise significantly, it became bright that the Monteverde district required more accommodation and restaurant services to meet the increased request. Stepping in to fill this need, Hotel Heliconia opened with only 5 visitor apartments, and 1 for the proprietors thus launching itself as a hiking pioneer in Monteverde.
